Cool Tool

Here's a really neat item from Focus Industries that many contractors will find very useful. The FT-02 lamp removal and installation tool is the answer to the question of how to either install or remove a 12-volt lamp from a compact fixture. The tool comes with two different sized suction cups that adhere to MR-11, MR-16 and PAR36 lamps as well as several other types of common 12 Volt lamps. This allows the user to easily remove and install these lamps in areas otherwise difficult to do so by hand.

Lenses and Louvers

If you've ever wondered what effect you can create by adding a color filter or lens to a fixture, you now have a resource. On page 11 of the latest CLL Product Catalog you'll find a wide variety of color lenses for MR16 and MR11 fixtures. Included with these lenses are suggested uses, advice where not to use a certain color and even the amount of foot-candle loss when using a particular lens.

Sales Tax

As of January 1st, 2008 forty-six states and the Dist. of Columbia all charge some percentage of sales tax on purchases made within that state. Currently this requirement to charge sales tax does not apply to intrastate sales. Although some states ask purchasers to self-report intrastate transactions, others have no taxing mechanism whatsoever. If this applies to your state, your purchases can be as much as 4 to 7 percent less when you purchase from out of state vendors, such as California Landscape Lighting.

EPACT 2005 AND MERCURY VAPOR

Since the beginning of the year there have been questions asked about the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and mercury vapor landscape lighting. The most important item to note is that EPACT2005 dictates that no new mercury vapor ballast be manufactured after January 1, 2008. The intent of the Energy Act is to remove the future use of mercury vapor lighting and its eventual replacement by a more efficient light source.

The act does not prohibit the sale of existing supplies of mercury vapor ballast and does not affect the current or future sales of mercury vapor lamps. This means you will have access to replacement lamps for years to come. Only the ballast will become less available.

As a mercury vapor alternative for future projects with the traditional moon lighting effect, it is possible to utilize Metal Halide light source. With either a color correcting filter or lamp, the Metal Halide can provide the color temperature similar to the phased out mercury vapor light source.

WORKING TOGETHER
By Tony Susca
CLL Sales Staff

How well do you know your products? Unfortunately, many contractors appear as uncertain about landscape lighting as their clients. This can be corrected simply by working with the right lighting distributors that know the product, and supply well over twenty-five manufacturers in lighting products.

One thing about landscape lighting, it's not an exact science. Depending on the project, lighting can be used with 120-volt fixtures, 12-volt fixtures, and the new LED fixtures, that many of our manufacturers offer.

Some contractors are unwilling to take the risk that their client would not like the end result. They may not be aware of the number of lighting products that are available. With a minimum amount of training and experience with landscape lighting, you can sell more lighting projects. As a landscape lighting installer, get your client actively involved with the lighting design by showing them some examples of what can be done. This will eliminate the risk. Have a good supply of fixtures, as samples to show your clients. Including one or two LED fixtures will always help.
